What should the Newcastle owners do?

The prospect of Newcastle United leaving St James’ Park is becoming more and more real.

Stadium plans have been a hot topic of conversation ever since the change of ownership at Newcastle United, but they have ramped up over the past 12 months.

The possibility of a completely new stadium has also become more real. Leaving St James’ Park never felt likely, but that began to change after Amanda Staveley left Newcastle United.

Now it is a very real possibility, with Newcastle leaning towards a new stadium that could cost as much as £1.2billion. That could become the preferred option, but the final decision will be made by PIF.

However, it is not the only option on the table. The Magpies could also opt to expand St James’ Park, which would mean there would be no emotional goodbye to such a historic stadium.

That would certainly be cheaper.

According to the Telegraph, expanding St James’ Park and increasing its capacity would cost between £600million and £800million.

There have been fears that PIF will not provide the money for a new stadium, so perhaps investing a smaller sum for a St James’ Park expansion could be more appealing. However, that is just speculation.

How long expanding St James’ Park will take

Increasing St James’ Park’s capacity would be cheaper, while it would also be quicker.

According to the Telegraph, a St James’ Park expansion could be completed in five years.

On top of that, the Telegraph add that Newcastle United would be able to keep playing at their home while the work was being done.

That is a pivotal factor too, as there has been speculation about Newcastle playing at the Stadium of Light. In truth, that was never going to happen, but it summed up how difficult it would be for the Magpies to find a temporary home.
