Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has heaped praise on Eddie Howe after a slow start at St James’ Park.
The final international break of 2025 is here, and Newcastle United fans are still waiting for Anthony Elanga to step up.
The Magpies forked out £55million to sign Elanga from Nottingham Forest over the summer, so expectations were high.
Elanga was a menace in his two seasons at Forest, but the former Manchester United man has struggled to recapture his best form.
Elanga feels he needs momentum at Newcastle as Magpies fans wait for him to make some kind of positive impact.
Anthony Elanga comments on Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe
Newcastle fans have been left unconvinced by Elanga so far, and Jacob Murphy has reclaimed his place on the right wing.
Elanga is having to settle for minutes off the bench, but Howe has not lost faith in him.
Howe has thrown his backing behind Elanga and believes that the winger will come good eventually.
Elanga has now commented on Howe, telling Fotboll Skanalen in Sweden that the Newcastle boss is a ‘great coach’.
Elanga added that Howe is always telling him to stay patient and ‘everything will be fine’, believing that his form will return as long as he doesn’t panic.
“He’s a great coach and a great person,” said Howe. “You can talk to him if you want to talk about something. He tells me to be patient and that everything will be fine,” he added.
Anthony Elanga shrugs off Newcastle United price tag
Newcastle fans would love nothing more than to see Elanga brush off this poor start and become a star on the right flank.
Elanga showed promise against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League but hasn’t built on that display.
Howe will give Elanga time and opportunities, but the considerable transfer fee means the pressure is on.
Elanga added that he doesn’t really think about his price tag, given that his transfer fee is out of his hands.
Elanga just wants to keep himself fit and ready to go, and believes there are enough games across various competitions for him to make an impact.
“A price tag is a price tag. I’m a footballer and I focus on the pitch and showing what I can do when I get the chance,” said Elanga.
“Don’t forget that we are in the Champions League, the League Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League. We also have international matches. First and foremost, it is important for me to stay healthy.
“When things go better, they will go better. I am a patient person and I know that when things go well, they will go well,” he added.
Elanga will hope for some joy against Switzerland and Slovenia in the coming days, but he needs some positive Newcastle displays after this international break.
