Bruno Guimaraes has said something rather worrying about this Newcastle United team after they beat Burnley.

Guimaraes became the first Newcastle United player in Premier League history to score directly from a corner on Saturday, sending a fine effort past Martin Dubravka.

That set Eddie Howe’s side on their way as Newcastle beat Burnley 2-1, with Anthony Gordon putting the hosts 2-0 up before the break with a penalty.

Zian Flemming, however, gave the Clarets a way back into the game after Jacob Ramsey was adjudged to have handled in the box.

While the Magpies saw the result out, it was a far nervier end to the game than it should have been.

Newcastle have already lost 11 Premier League points from losing positions this season, so conceding so late would have caused fear among the fanbase.

Speaking after the game, Guimaraes made an alarming admission.

Bruno Guimaraes admits Newcastle United got complacent against Burnley

Guimaraes was, once again, a standout for Howe’s side on the day.

After a poor start to the game, the Brazilian took it upon himself to fire in an effort from a corner.

He also went close with a rabona, having clearly felt confident.

However, when speaking to Premier League Productions, the Brazilian did admit that the team already thought the game was won before they conceded late.

“Great to be back here at home and win the three points [and] to do 10 of 12 points in the last four games,” he said.

“We concede a goal we should not concede in the end. It’s like I said midweek, mentality. We thought the game was gone but in Premier League the game is never gone until the last whistle. Happy, anyway. I think we [did] control the game but we cannot relax until the end.”

That is simply not good enough. How they haven’t learned to play to the final whistle yet is extremely worrying indeed.

Is this what you want to hear from a Newcastle United captain? 👀 Why do they never learn?!

How many goals Newcastle United have conceded in stoppage time this season

Newcastle are struggling to see games out and while Saturday didn’t cost them, conceding so late on is becoming a worrying trend.

Burnley’s penalty was the sixth goal Newcastle have conceded in stoppage time this season.

On three occasions (vs Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham), it has directly cost them points.

It’s an alarming trend. Having just been burned against Spurs on Tuesday, to suddenly just think a game is won only a few days later does not say much for their mentality.

Intensity is supposed to be Newcastle’s identity under Howe. Right now, it’s inertia.
