Report: How Newcastle insiders actually feel about the seahorses on their club crest

Poor seahorses!

On Friday, Newcastle United confirmed some very big news indeed.

For the first time since 1988, Newcastle United are set for a new club badge. Newcastle have confirmed plans to change their club crest and will consult supporters over a new design.

Clearly, it’s likely to be a divisive move. The PIF takeover at St James’ Park in October 2021 was always going to change the club forever and, broadly, it has been a positive. Eddie Howe, of course, became the man to end Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic honour by winning the Carabao Cup in March while under their ownership.

However, change can be painful at times. Newcastle plan to build a new stadium too, which again will surely split the fanbase.

For now though, it’s the club crest that’s changing and the iconic seahorses on the badge could go.

How Newcastle United insiders feel about the seahorses on their club crest

Newcastle have seahorses on their club crest to reflect the city’s maritime history and their image is also seen on the city’s Coat of Arms.

Still, according to The Daily Telegraph, insiders believe there’s a slight issue with them.

They claim that insiders at the club believe the badge is just too complex, given it also shows a Norman castle and a lion holding a St George’s flag. It’s said that they are deemed too small and cannot be seen when sewn onto a team shirt.

In regard to the seahorses, it’s said that they are not aligned properly. That means, when looked upon closely, the badge is lopsided and is therefore difficult to replicate.

It’s not yet clear if the seahorses will remain as part of the new design.

How many badges have Newcastle United had?

Newcastle have had four club crests in history, with the current version being branded onto shirts and merchandise since 1988.

Interestingly, the club did not even have a badge on their shirt until 1969, when the city’s Coat of Arms appeared on them.

According to the report above, from the 2026/27 season, however, a fifth crest looks set to emerge. Supporters will be allowed some say in the matter, although voting for the current badge will not be an option.

Change does not have to be a bad thing but this is a hugely important decision for the Newcastle United owners. They simply have to get it right.
