Newcastle United are hoping to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.
21-year-old William Osula was brought to the club in 2024, but is currently seen as more of a ‘project’ player by Toon boss Eddie Howe and his staff.
Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United contract runs out this summer. Now 33, there is no sign that the club are willing to keep him on for another season.
Performances off the bench have been subpar for the England international this season, and with Newcastle in Europe next season, the need for more quality off the bench is key.
Alexander Isak is being backed to stay at Newcastle, despite interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal. The Swede will be an integral part of the Magpies’ future, with club chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan reluctant to see his ‘favourite’ player leave.
Newcastle have had their eye on Hugo Ekitike for over three years, but found themselves hung out to dry in 2022 when he rejected a move in favour of joining a European giant.
The Magpies have since regained an interest, and have now been told how much they will need to pay for him this summer.
Newcastle United learn Hugo Ekitike price tag
Ekitike is a controversial figure on Tyneside. The young striker rejected a move to Newcastle in favour of PSG, but the switch ended up being a disaster for him.
Ekitike admitted he ‘couldn’t refuse’ PSG’s offer, and wanted to make it clear he held no grudge against Newcastle. In 2025, Ekitike is now a big star for Bundesliga side Frankfurt, scoring 14 goals in 28 league games.
Newcastle want Ekitike, but might be put off after learning how much they will need to fork out to sign him. According to Bild, Newcastle must pay at least £77m for Ekitike this summer, a fee that would smash the club’s existing transfer record.
The report states that Frankfurt’s asking price is relative to that of Isak, who will cost well over £100m for any interested party.
Furthermore, it is believed that Ekitike could cost as much as £85m, a much bigger fee than what Manchester City paid for Omar Marmoush, who left Frankfurt in January.
Newcastle United must steer clear of Hugo Ekitike
While Ekitike is enjoying the best form of his career, a move to Newcastle is not the one he should be making.
Isak’s sensational form means that it is difficult to drop him, which could immediately cause problems for Ekitike who will surely be expecting to start every week.
Instead, Newcastle need to look for a striker who is happy to be used as a backup and will be much cheaper than what Frankfurt are asking for their forward.

Newcastle are linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a player who is out of contract this summer and is set to leave Everton on a free transfer.
Calvert-Lewin wants £100,000-a-week wages, which Newcastle should be able to afford. The belief is that the 27-year-old will also be happy to play second fiddle to Isak if a move does come to fruition.
