'I would say': Jacob Murphy now names his fastest Newcastle United teammate

Would love to see that race!

Newcastle United have some searing pace in their squad.

Indeed, the likes of Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon offer devastating speed in attack, while players such as Sven Botman, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall provide running power in defence.

At their best, Eddie Howe’s side are capable of running through teams with their power as well as pace.

As a group of hungry young athletes, there’s no doubt a competitive element amongst the Newcastle United squad in training too.

With that in mind, comments from Murphy when asked exactly who was the fastest player in the squad are interesting.

Jacob Murphy names Newcastle United’s fastest player

Bruno Guimaraes thinks Gordon is Newcastle’s fastest player, though it appears Murphy has other thoughts.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day’s X channel, Murphy in fact named William Osula as the quickest player in the Toon squad.

He did, however, add that Gordon could give the 21-year-old a run for his money.

“The fastest in the team now I would say is Will Osula,” he said.

“Lightning fast. I also think Anthony Gordon would give him a good run for his money.”

Will Osula set for Newcastle United position change

The former Sheffield United youngster has had to bide his time for first-team minutes this season.

Howe has afforded Osula only 17 appearances across all competitions this season, of which only three have been starts.

Arriving at St James’ Park as a striker, it seems the Dane could actually change position going forward.

Howe confirmed Osula could become a right-winger when speaking after the 3-0 win over Ipswich last month, a game in which he scored.

That pace could come in handy on the wing. It’s difficult to see Osula suddenly being handed minutes any time soon given what’s at stake this season but perhaps that’s a position he can try and make his own over the coming seasons.

Osula is expected to leave Newcastle on loan this summer but that does not mean he cannot play a role in the years to come.
