Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade has become an instant hero on Tyneside amid constant chatter from Germany.
Any striker coming into Newcastle United this past summer faced pressure.
Alexander Isak forced his way to Liverpool, and Newcastle invested in Nick Woltemade as his replacement.
The giant forward arrived with a similarly enormous price tag, despite enjoying just one strong season in the Bundesliga.
A record of four goals in six Premier League games means Woltemade has quickly quietened his doubters – in England, anyway.
Nick Pope on Nick Woltemade ‘madness’
Woltemade’s move to Newcastle has been big news in Germany.
Julian Nagelsmann has turned to Woltemade as Germany’s new top striker, so perhaps the media coverage shouldn’t be a surprise.
The strongest reaction came as Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness claimed that Newcastle had overpaid for Woltemade.
Bayern wanted Woltemade over the summer, so there was a sense of bitterness behind those words.
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has now told Ben Foster’s Fozcast that the comments from Hoeness were ‘madness’.
Pope can’t understand why Hoeness even made the comments in the first place, questioning why people now feel free to talk about players at other clubs.
Pope noted that it all looks great for Woltemade now, as he is ‘banging goals’ in for Newcastle and repaying that price tag.
“It’s madness,” said Pope.
“Obviously, the standard line is I don’t talk about players from another team. Do we not do that anymore? Now he’s banging goals every few days, it looks great for Nick. He’ll take anything like that in his stride. He’s very mellow and settled into the group great,” he added.
Bayern Munich links to Nick Woltemade won’t go away
Woltemade has shrugged off those comments from Hoeness and is doing his talking on the pitch.
The problem is that, as one of Germany’s top talents, the links with Bayern will be persistent.
Even last week, we saw claims from Germany suggesting that Woltemade would still like to join Bayern down the line.
Harry Kane turns 33 next summer, and there are real similarities between his style of play and Woltemade’s.
Speculation around Bayern is bound to continue in 2026 and beyond, but Newcastle have to simply block it out and continue to develop Woltemade into a superstar goalscorer.
If Bayern come calling, then it means Woltemade has done something right – and Newcastle can command a huge fee.
