Craig Hope thinks Anthony Gordon could change position for a third time this season for Newcastle

Anthony Gordon could be set for another new role at Newcastle United ahead of his return to former club Everton on Saturday.

This season, Gordon has played as a striker and a left-winger under Eddie Howe.

While the England international has played well in the Champions League from the left wing, his performances as a striker don’t fully convince.

That’s not totally his fault, of course. Though Gordon has been criticised by Newcastle fans, it is worth remembering that it’s not his natural position.

Granted, that is a charitable description of Gordon’s current predicament. The fact he hasn’t scored in the Premier League since January is difficult to ignore.

Now, ahead of his first trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has suggested Gordon could move position again.

Anthony Gordon could play as a right-winger for Newcastle United against Everton

Hope was speaking on a video posted on YouTube.

The Newcastle expert was running through the team news ahead of Saturday’s clash and actually suggested Gordon could play on the right on Merseyside.

Wherever he plays on Saturday, he’s surely in for a hostile reception from the home supporters.

“I think he might play Anthony Gordon on the right, in place of Jacob Murphy,” he said.

Should Newcastle United have signed Jack Grealish in the summer?

“Murphy, who for me, has done nothing wrong. He’s actually done more than that. In the game against Manchester City, he was fantastic.

“I do think that is the big selection call, given [Nick] Woltemade will come back in at centre-forward.

“It’s almost a toss of a coin as to who he plays on the right between Murphy and Gordon. But Gordon has to start offering more now, especially in the Premier League in terms of that output.”

Anthony Gordon told people he doesn’t want to be a right winger

Back in November 2024, Hope also revealed that Gordon told people at Newcastle that he would rather play as a left winger.

It is worth remembering, however, that he produced a fine assist for Alexander Isak when playing there during a win over Arsenal at St James’ Park almost a year ago now.

In seven appearances as a right winger last season, Gordon recorded two assists.

That is a decent return and hopefully potentially moving over to the opposite side yields an improvement out of him.

Gordon’s form has been the source of huge frustration but constantly moving positions cannot have been easy.

To pretend he’s been brilliant when playing in his natural role, however, would be foolish.

No matter where he plays, Gordon needs to start delivering. With a World Cup on the horizon, he desperately needs to find form at club level for his own sake.
