Fulham 2 Newcastle United 0 – Sunday 24 May 2026 4pm
Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘A disappointing end to the season.
A game with nothing at stake for either club played out with just a few quality moves but nothing much else.
Always like going to Fulham but today had a low feeling about it.
Thanks for the 25/26 journey home and away, bring on next season with renewed hope.’
Billy Miller:
‘Underwhelming end to an underwhelming league campaign made all the worse for Sunderland earning themselves a place in Europe.
It’s been a tough old slog but it’s over now.
It’s all about the summer now and making sure we have a much more effective one than the 2025 edition.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘A disappointing Newcastle United season came to predictable end with defeat at Fulham on Sunday.
In March what looked like it could turn out to be a really encouraging season has turned out to be the most disappointing in the new era of the club.
This is all made to feel a lot worse by the facts Sunderland were able to get into Europe by beating a woeful Chelsea. I suppose there’s some consolation that we haven’t spent a billion pounds like the Blues.
A crucially important summer is ahead if we are to get back to where we expect to be.’
Dan Wilkins:
‘I think when Sandro Tonali got injured in the warm up and had to last minute drop out of the starting eleven, the writing was on the wall.
With Schar, Joelinton, Krafth, Livramento, Miley and then the Italy international added to that unavailable list, plus then Gordon and Trippier left out as they are set to leave, it became very difficult.
There was the odd moment that suggested better but not nearly enough of them.
Great to see Geordie teenage striker Sean Neave get his first ever Premier League minutes but that is where the positives pretty much end.’
David Punton:
‘A lamentable final day.
Everything we don’t want to be.
We need to be way better next season. That was such a poor way to bow out.
The season after our best season ever was always going to be hard to match. So it proved.
Also rans.
Eddie Howe worries me.
I really really really hope I’m wrong – but I think he could end with the sack next season if he can’t get things back on track.
A poor day for us. See you next season.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Sums up the season in a nutshell.
Plus two defeats off the village of the dammed and them qualifying for Europe makes it a very unpalatable trip to the capital.
Certain players their last games for the club and maybe our manager.
With the mackems now in Europe it’s going to be a busy old time at Pennywell international airport….
Gutted about this season but I will be there next season.’
Matt Busby said…:
‘Really poor. Words fail me.
I cant think of anything positive to say, other than even if we’d won, we wouldn’t have qualified for Europe.’
