Lewis Miley was almost Newcastle United’s hero against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

The 19-year-old was introduced in the second half in place of Joelinton, and almost gave Newcastle United all three points in Germany.

His second half header turned the game on its head, after Anthony Gordon had drawn the Magpies level from the spot. However, Eddie Howe’s side could not hold on as Newcastle United drew 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen.

It was a disappointing finale at the BayArena, but the Magpies can be very happy with their second half display as they now look towards the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

Lewis Miley should start for Newcastle United against Sunderland

Ahead of that game, Howe must realise that it is Lewis Miley who should join Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in midfield.

The 19-year-old was excellent during his second half cameo in the Champions League, showcasing exactly why he is rated so highly internally at St James’ Park.

As always, Miley was composed and clinical in possession. His ball retention was excellent, which is exactly why he has to start ahead of Joelinton.

Joelinton may have physicality, but so does Miley. The teenager can absolutely handle himself in the derby, as Newcastle United prepare to do battle with Sunderland.

To cap off his excellent performance, Miley showed real endeavour to get in the box and head home Anthony Gordon’s impressive cross. It was what his performance deserved, having come close with another header just minutes earlier.

Joelinton suffers an injury scare ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby

Miley’s case to start against Sunderland is strengthened by Joelinton coming off with an injury against Bayer Leverkusen.

The 29-year-old was not happy about being substituted, with Howe opting to protect him rather than take any risks ahead of the derby.

Joelinton’s reaction would suggest his injury is not serious, but that remains unclear.

After the game, Howe confirmed Joelinton had a groin issue, which is why he was taken off.
