Newcastle United have confirmed what are proving to be largely unpopular plans to change the club’s crest.

The current Newcastle United crest has been on the team’s shirts since 1988. It is a logo loved by many supporters over the world, one that saw Eddie Howe’s team finally end Newcastle’s long wait for a trophy when they won the Carabao Cup in March.

However, owners PIF are looking to change things up. The Newcastle United owners bought the club in October 2021 and have overseen what has broadly been a positive change at St James’ Park, transforming pretty much everything about the club along the way.

With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about the Newcastle club crest.

Why are Newcastle United changing their club crest?

In a statement released by the club, Newcastle confirmed they were changing their crest as their current badge “doesn’t always translate well in today’s digital world.”

The statement also said: “As our club grows on the global stage, the symbol that represents us needs to be able to keep pace. It needs to show up clearly and confidently across everything – from kits to screens to merchandise.”

Previously, the likes of Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Everton, Manchester City, Tottenham and West Ham have changed their crests.

When will Newcastle United change their club crest?

According to the Daily Mail, the new Newcastle United badge will come in for the start of the 2026/27 season.

The club have confirmed that a “fan consultation workshop” including Season Ticket Holders and Members will be held on Wednesday 14 May, 2025.

That will provide supporters – both at St James’ and online – the chance to hear more from the club while also providing their thoughts.

Fans will have the chance to vote on a number of different designs before a new badge is created. Keeping the current crest, however, will not be an option.

Why are there seahorses on the Newcastle United club crest?

Ardent Newcastle fans do not need telling of course but many perhaps less connected to every facet of the club will be wondering why there are seahorses on the Newcastle United club crest.

The seahorses – albeit one with hooves – are there to reflect the city of Newcastle’s importance as a seaport and its significant maritime history in general. They were added to the city’s Coat of Arms in 1575.

The logo reflects the city of Newcastle’s Coat of Arms, which also includes a Norman castle and a lion holding a St George’s flag.
