Newcastle United full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento were among those who reacted as Paul Dummett announced his retirement from football.
Dummett progressed through the ranks of the Newcastle United academy and made a total of 213 appearances for his boyhood club after making his debut in 2013.
The full-back enjoyed a fine career with Newcastle and was part of the squad who won the Championship under Rafa Benitez.
Including Martin Dubravka, there are 12 players who have played for both Newcastle and Burnley! How many do you reckon you can name!
Dummett is a huge Newcastle supporter and lived the dream. He scored brilliant goals against Liverpool and Manchester United and remained part of the plans even after Eddie Howeâs revolution.
Dummett finished his career at Carlisle, though he was quickly released after signing for the club in January.
The former Wales defender was a popular figure on Tyneside, as was evident to some of the reactions to his big announcement.
Current and former Newcastle United players congratulate Paul Dummett on his career
On Friday, Dummett posted a collage of images on Instagram captioned: âThe time has comeâŚâ
Hall and Livramento responded with love hearts.
Fellow current Newcastle players Jacob Murphy and Sven Botman also reacted with messages.
Murphy wrote: âCongrats on an amazing career PD3! Lived the dream.â
Botman added: âCongrats buddy, can be proud.â
On social media platform X, meanwhile, club legend Alan Shearer wrote: âCongrats Paul on a brilliant career. Good luck in retirement.â
If you bumped into Eddie Howe on the street right now, what changes would you tell him to make vs Burnley?!
Why Paul Dummett has decided to retire less than halfway through a season
Dummett left Newcastle in May 2024 but couldnât find a long-term home after brief spells at Wigan and Carlisle.
Still, itâs relatively surprising for a player to hang up their boots less than halfway through a campaign, particularly one who is only 34 years of age.
In a statement posted on Newcastle Unitedâs official website, Dummett admitted he was not fully committed to the offers he has received.
âA lot of people have said, âdonât retire, play as long as you can, youâre a long time retired after footballâ, which is a fair point,â he said.
âEveryone has a different opinion. The opportunities I had, in my head I wasnât 100 per cent committed to.
âEverything Iâve done, Iâve been 100 per cent committed to doing, and I didnât feel like it would be good for me or the club if I wasnât wanting to be there. I thought this would be the right decision, even though itâs one Iâm sad about taking.â
That, he says, told him it was best to retire, having previously been committed to every aspect of his football career.
