Sandro Tonali’s fitness is up for debate as Newcastle United look for a big Premier League response against Manchester City.

Newcastle United desperately need to raise their game when Pep Guardiola’s side come to St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Eddie Howe’s side have endured a dreadful start to their Premier League campaign and, after losing consecutive away games, they will be expected to turn up at home.

With that in mind, Howe needs his key players fit and available. Newcastle are in dreadful Premier League form and need to turn things around before things get ugly on Tyneside.

The level of Tonali’s fitness isn’t clear, so here’s the latest Newcastle United injury news and potential return dates.

Sandro Tonali

On Saturday, Fabrizio Romano claimed that Tonali was not 100% fit for Italy.

The reporter suggested that the midfielder would head back to the Newcastle United training ground as a result.

However, when speaking later that day, Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso said: “Tonali is also out, he doesn’t have any physical issues, but we won’t risk him given his booking. He’ll train today and he will be at the stadium tomorrow.”

As such, it’s not clear how serious Tonali’s issue is. The mood music certainly doesn’t suggest it’s a big problem, at least.

Potential return date: Unknown

Tino Livramento

Tino Livramento has missed Newcastle’s last nine games due to a knee injury sustained while playing against Arsenal.

Fortunately for supporters, Livramento could return for Newcastle against Manchester City.

Earlier this month, the Newcastle United manager said: “We are looking at the Manchester City game for him for when he can be available for.”

Potential return date: Saturday, 22 November, 2025

Yoane Wissa

Newcastle fans are eagerly awaiting Yoane Wissa’s debut for the club.

Unable to feature since his move from Brentford because of a knee injury, it’s added to the frustration of the campaign thus far.

Wissa isn’t expected to play for Newcastle against Manchester City but reports have indicated there’s a slim chance he could be on the bench against Everton later this month.

Howe said before Brentford: “He’s working well. He’s on the grass and he’s building his fitness. The knee is feeling good and there’s no problems with that.

“It’s more a case of looking at his fitness, sharpness, all the things he’s going to need to put together. He’s in a good place to kick on and push his body. We need to give him time to get robust enough and be in a position to give his best for the team. I’m sure he’ll be worth the wait.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Joelinton

Joelinton, while a hugely popular figure on Tyneside, is not playing well this season and an unfortunate time of things continued for him before the international break.

The midfielder was forced off early during the defeat in west London.

However, according to The Chronicle, Joelinton suffered only a cut from a challenge with Dango Outtara. As such, he seems unlikely to miss too much action.

Potential return date: November 2025

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon is another leading Newcastle star enduring a poor season, one made worse by a hip injury that saw him pull out of the England squad.

Gordon missed Newcastle’s defeat to Brentford and while Howe has previously suggested it wasn’t too severe, it was enough to rule him out of international duty.

Before Brentford, Howe said: “We don’t think it’s a serious injury but we’re going to get him scanned and we’re awaiting the results.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Nick Pope

Like Joelinton, Nick Pope was forced off against Brentford.

Pope has suffered a concussion and had to pull out of the Three Lions camp alongside Gordon.

All being well, he should be available for Saturday’s clash with City, although it remains to be seen if Howe opts to bring Aaron Ramsdale into the fold after calls from supporters.

Of Pope, Howe said: “Nick, I think, did have concussion so that’s a 12-day period for him where he doesn’t play.”

Potential return date: November 2025

William Osula

William Osula was named on the bench for Newcastle’s Champions League clash with Athletic Bilbao but was removed from the squad due to an ankle injury.

That’s a blow for Newcastle, both because Nick Woltemade needs cover and because Osula has impressed when called upon this season.

When addressing Osula’s fitness before the Brentford game, Howe claimed Osula was facing “weeks” out rather than months.

“He’ll have a period of rest but, again, it’s not a serious injury,” he said. “We expect him to be weeks, not any longer.”
