William Osula has been tipped to improve as a player if he leaves Newcastle United during the January transfer window.

Even ahead of the window opening, Osula has been strongly linked with a move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

The forward has impressed when called upon for Newcastle United this season but injuries have prevented him from playing since November.

With both Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade fit again, Osula has fallen down the pecking order once more.

Frankfurt want to sign Osula as they continue to strengthen their squad following the summer sale of Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool.

European football expert Andy Brassell believes there’s a real sense Osula could kick on if he were allowed to move to Germany.

Expert backs William Osula to improve if he leaves Newcastle United

Brassell, an expert across European football, believes Osula could be destined to follow in Ivan Toney’s footsteps.

Newcastle, of course, sold Toney to Peterborough in 2018 and later became one of the leading forwards in the Premier League at Brentford, as well as an England international.

Toney needed game time to prove himself and Osula, if he gets that following a potential move to Frankfurt, could do something similar in his career.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Brassell said: “I spoke with Curtis Davies, who’d worked with him at Derby County, when he turned up at Newcastle in the first place, and I remember him saying, ‘This guy’s got the talent to go all the way.’

“It’s tempting to say that maybe Newcastle haven’t always been able to develop players from scratch in the past.

“I think you look at Ivan Toney, obviously that’s a different era of Newcastle, so you can’t really blame it on the present management.

“But it wouldn’t surprise me if a similar thing happened and Osula really went up a couple of other levels after going somewhere else.”

Why Newcastle United must take the risk and sell William Osula

There’s certainly some logic in keeping Osula.

After all, Wissa’s injury left Woltemade all alone up front, so having three strikers in the squad feels important.

Still, Newcastle haven’t been very good at selling players for years now. The only major sales they’ve ever made have come against their wishes (Alexander Isak, Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson).

Frankly, a club can only sell a player for a significant sum when there’s a buyer.

Frankfurt appear to represent one and that should not be ignored.

Obviously, Newcastle could decide to keep Osula and address the situation again next summer.

Still, more time on the sidelines would do little to raise his value.

Newcastle will consider selling players like Osula in January and that does feel wise.
