Opinion: The four players Newcastle United must build new era around ahead of squad upheaval

It seems like there will be another summer of upheaval at Newcastle United – and there are only a few players the club should 100% build around.

Following a disappointing campaign, several big-name players are expected to leave Newcastle United this summer

While that’s disappointing, it doesn’t have to be all bad. Big clubs can sell players and replace them adequately before going again. Newcastle are expected to rebuild, but not everything needs to change.

With that in mind, Geordie Boot Boys looks at the four players the club need to ensure stay at St James’ Park next season.

Bruno Guimaraes

It is impossible to imagine a Newcastle United team without Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian remains as important as ever and there are still chapters to write in his story on Tyneside.

Selling Guimaraes is unthinkable for Newcastle, given he is the beating heart of this team.

Some players come and go but the midfielder is so important to every facet at the club, it would be foolish to cash in.

Newcastle must allow Guimaraes to lead them into a new era.

Lewis Hall

Tino Livramento may leave Newcastle this summer, but Lewis Hall shouldn’t.

Hall is undoubtedly one of the best left-backs in the world and still has levels to reach. The 21-year-old is far from the finished article and that is seriously exciting.

Linked with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona recently, it’s easy to see why Hall would attract such major interest.

However, Newcastle have to ignore it for another year at least.

Lewis Miley

Lewis Miley can be the face of this Newcastle project for years to come.

Indeed, Miley wants to stay at Newcastle and the local lad – an academy graduate no less – is only getting better.

At 19, there’s still so much more to come from him. Miley is playing the best football of his Newcastle career and looks like an England international in waiting.

He’s exactly the sort of player the club should be doing everything to keep.

Malick Thiaw

Malick Thiaw should be another pillar upon which Newcastle build.

Thiaw has proven an excellent signing for Newcastle, despite a recent dip in form after playing so much football without a break.

The 24-year-old is a bargain at a reported £30million and is now surely worth at least double that.

Newcastle, however, would be wise to ignore any potential interest. Thiaw can be their starting centre-back for years to come.
