Newcastle United have a great chance to make it three Premier League wins on the spin against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.
After two very different away days, Eddie Howe’s side are back at St James’ Park. Following the disappointment of Marseille, Newcastle United beat Everton to get their first Premier League away win of the season.
It will hopefully prove to be a defining moment in the Magpies’ season, as they aim to continue their good form against Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle United have already beaten Spurs in the Carabao Cup this season, while Thomas Frank’s side are going through a difficult period. They are without a win in their last four Premier League games, and Paul Merson thinks that will extend to five on Tuesday.
Will Eddie Howe make it five wins in a row against Spurs at home?!
Paul Merson backs Newcastle United to beat Spurs
As part of his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has given his verdict on what the score will be when Newcastle face Spurs at St James’ Park.
The former Arsenal forward has predicted a Toon victory, with Nick Woltemade backed to get on the scoresheet yet again after his glorious lob against Everton.
“Tottenham are under severe pressure now,” he said.
“Even though both Newcastle and Tottenham are on the same number of points, their trajectory is the exact opposite. Newcastle are on the rise by winning their last two, while Spurs have now lost twice in a row!”
Merson added: “Nick Woltemade has been amazing for Newcastle. I’ve waxed lyrical about him all season. He scores all sorts of goals, lovely little lob over the goalkeeper against Everton, we don’t see that a lot in modern football these days. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t score in this game!
“Tottenham take one step forward and then go three steps back. Frank is under serious pressure after his comments too. I expect Newcastle to win this game. So basically, it will be a cup final for Frank when Spurs face his former club Brentford on Saturday.”
Merson’s prediction: Newcastle United 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1.
The last time Newcastle United lost to Spurs at home
You have to go back to November 2021 for the last time Newcastle United lost to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park.
It is an iconic game despite the result, as it was the first following the PIF takeover. The atmosphere inside St James’ Park was initially electric, with Wor Flags returning and the new owners being welcomed to Tyneside like heroes.
Who was at St James’ Park on this day? Amazing atmosphere, terrible result!
It was the first game after the PIF takeover, as Amanda Staveley and co were welcomed to Tyneside!
However, the performance on the pitch did not match the atmosphere in the stands. Despite taking an early lead through Callum Wilson, Steve Bruce’s side would lose 3-2.
It proved to be his last as Newcastle United manager, with Amanda Staveley and co relieving him of his duties after the defeat.
What came next was the appointment of Eddie Howe, who has won all four of his games against Spurs at St James’ Park.
