Alan Shearer is hoping he can see into the future as Newcastle United aim to get their Premier League campaign back on track.
It has been a frustrating season for Newcastle United, who have barely spent any time at all in the top half.
Rotten away form and stoppage time goals have held Eddie Howe’s side back, but there is still hope that the 2025/26 season can be special. Newcastle are in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and doing well in the Champions League, while a string of positive results could quickly change their Premier League fortunes.
That string of results could be on the horizon according to Alan Shearer, who has picked out a secret weapon that Eddie Howe suddenly has at his disposal.
Wissa has to start against Palace! Tell me I’m wrong!
Alan Shearer loved Yoane Wissa’s ‘scrappy’ Newcastle United goal
Shearer has been speaking about Newcastle United’s win over Burnley on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast, praising Yoane Wissa for his early goal.
It was a scruffy tap-in from the 29-year-old, which is the type of goal that Newcastle United have not scored enough of this season.
Yoane Wissa’s return to fitness should change that, while Shearer has hinted that the Magpies’ upcoming fixtures could lead to a surge up the Premier League table.

“It was a scrappy, six-yard goal which was great,” he said.
“We didn’t have that six-yard threat at Manchester United. He did well in terms of that.
“Anthony Gordon did really well for the first 15 to 20 minutes, set up the first goal. Faded late on in the second half.
“Plenty to work on, but for Wissa and his goal and confidence and all of that, three points for Eddie and the team… their next three league games are Crystal Palace at home, Leeds at home then Wolves. Three big games coming up after a hugely important away win.”
If you could make one demand of Eddie Howe before Newcastle United play Crystal Palace – what would it be?
Yoane Wissa can lead Newcastle United’s European push
With Wissa finally fit, available and scoring goals, there is reason for optimism on Tyneside.
While Nick Woltemade has done well and remains a player with huge potential, the Magpies look much more dangerous with Wissa through the middle.
The fact he is now deemed fit enough to start games for Newcastle United is a huge boost, and that should hopefully lead to a change in fortunes.
As Shearer says, Newcastle’s next three games are very winnable, especially with two of them being at home. Three wins out of three would put the Magpies on 35 points after 22 games, and would likely mean they are firmly back in the hunt to qualify for Europe.
Given how congested the Premier League is this season, there is every reason to believe that Newcastle will climb up the table if they can find the consistency that has eluded them thus far.
