Report: Eddie Howe set to snub defender with 'big potential' from next season's Newcastle squad

Would be a wise move!

Newcastle United could be set for a big summer on the transfer front.

Newcastle United, of course, have struggled to sign players over the last few transfer windows due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, that could change at the end of the season. Newcastle insiders think there is money to spend this summer, which will no doubt be music to the ears of supporters.

It’s also going to be a changing of the guard in terms of outgoings. Sean Longstaff has been tipped to leave Newcastle, while Callum Wilson is among those out of contract.

Newcastle sold Yankuba Minteh last summer without the forward ever playing a senior game for them. Although it comes in a slightly different context, the same thing could happen with Harrison Ashby this time around.

Newcastle United could sell Harrison Ashby this summer

Newcastle paid around £3million for Ashby from West Ham in January 2023 but he has never actually made a competitive senior appearance for them.

Asked about the 23-year-old’s future in a recent Q&A in The Daily Mail, Craig Hope revealed there was no suggestion Ashby would return to St James’ Park as a viable option for the first-team, having spent the Championship season just gone on loan at QPR.

“I’ve heard nothing to suggest Ashby is viewed as a viable first-team member next season,” wrote Hope.

“He could well be sold or loaned out again.”

Newcastle United told about Harrison Ashby’s “big potential”

Ashby impressed for QPR against Sunderland on the final day of the Championship season, providing the assist in a 1-0 win over the Black Cats.

While it remains to be seen if the London club go back in for him this summer, it seems the defender was highly rated.

Former QPR manager Marti Cifuentes said Ashby had “big potential”, although it seems Newcastle’s strength in depth at full-back means he won’t get to realise it on Tyneside.

If Newcastle can turn a profit on Ashby, it’d be a masterstroke. If a loan move is more likely, hopefully he can build on his Championship displays at QPR.
