League position could hinder Everton vs Newcastle
We recently argued that Everton’s attacking weakness can be exploited by Newcastle, but Eddie Howe might be able to rely on something else entirely, when we look at a very specific run of results between the two sides.
The funny thing is, while Everton are above Newcastle in the league right now, it doesn’t actually help them. In fact, the Toffees have lost their last six games against Newcastle when they’ve been looking down at them in the Premier League rankings.
They’ve not met the Magpies in this position since February 2022, when they lost 3-1. Across the other five clashes of this particular nature, Everton have drawn two and lost a further three.
If Newcastle can record another win against Everton and win by more than one goal, they will overtake David Moyes’ side in the table on goal difference.

Newcastle have to climb the table fast
They may be down in 14th place right now, but Newcastle are tipped to finish in the top eight come the end of the season, based on their current trajectory.
If the Magpies are to achieve their goal of qualifying for European football at all this season, they have to put together a strong run of results and fast.

This upcoming run of fixtures is difficult for Newcastle, with the likes of Chelsea and Sunderland coming up before Christmas.
But, winning against Everton and then taking on an inconsistent Spurs team and a poor Burnley side should be the kind of momentum the Geordies need right now.
