Who was Newcastle's best player against Fulham? 🤔

Alan Shearer was not too impressed with Newcastle United’s performance against Fulham, but there were two Toon players who stood out.

Eddie Howe’s side left it late on Saturday, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring in the 90th minute to give Newcastle United a 2-1 win over Fulham.

It was a huge moment from the captain, but the plaudits have been going to Will Osula. It was his outstanding run and shot that resulted in Bruno getting the winner, as Howe’s substitute made the difference.

However, the player who deserves the most adulation according to Alan Shearer was at the opposite end of the pitch.

Alan Shearer picks out Malick Thiaw for his performance against Fulham

The Newcastle United legend addressed his former side’s win over Fulham on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

After admitting that the Magpies did not play too well, he quickly took the opportunity to heap praise on Toon defender Malick Thiaw.

“They left it late Newcastle,” he said.

“They won the game, they weren’t brilliant.

“I thought Malick Thiaw at centre-half was superb. Bruno got a brilliant goal, captain’s performance.

“They made hard work of it. Fulham came very close to going away with a point. You have to feel for them a little bit.”

Malick Thiaw continues impressive Newcastle United form after odd criticism

Thiaw continued his bright start in black and white, putting in another strong performance to ensure Newcastle United put another three points on the board.

The 24-year-old was outstanding, proving once again what a signing he was at £34million from AC Milan. It also proved why Eddie Howe is right in believing that Thiaw and Sven Botman will be Newcastle’s centre-backs for years.

The German has taken no time at all to settle into English football, with his only blemish coming away to Bournemouth when he should have been sent off. Other than that game, Thiaw has been bordering on perfection.

However, that was not how he was viewed in Portugal after Newcastle’s win over Benfica in the Champions League.

Despite playing well that night, Thiaw was given a score of 4/10 by Portuguese outlet A Bola for his performance. It made him the worst Newcastle United player, on a night that the Magpies breezed past Jose Mourinho’s side. It was an incredibly harsh rating that did not reflect how he had played at all.

Fast forward a few days and you could argue that he was Newcastle’s best player against Fulham. He truly was excellent, with the Malick Thiaw chant constantly being sung inside St James’ Park.
