Bruno Guimaraes now looks set to stay at Newcastle United this summer – but that does not mean a return to Brazil at some point in his career is not going to happen.
Recently, Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester United. Still, The Daily Mail suggest that the Red Devils are unlikely to pursue him and instead attempt to sign Sandro Tonali.
Meanwhile, The Chronicle have recently claimed that Guimaraes is happy at Newcastle United.
That will no doubt be music to the ears of a set of supporters who absolutely idolise the midfielder.
However, there will be a day when Guimaraes leaves St James’ Park, as there will be for all players at all football clubs.
If and when he does return to Brazil, he has two clubs in mind.
Guimaraes will either play for Vasco da Gama or Athletico Paranaense if he returns to Brazil
Speaking on Caze TV, Guimaraes said when showing the hosts a collection of the football shirts in his home: “Vasco gave me this one [a shirt]. A gift.”
One of the hosts then says: “You’re going to play for Vasco, right?”
To which Guimaraes replies: “Ah, man, I really want to. If I come back to Brazil, it’s either Athletico or Vasco, man.”
The midfielder pretty much began his career with Athletico Paranaense, who are based in the city of Curitiba.
While he started out with Audax in Sao Paolo, he made his name with Athletico Paranaense before joining Lyon.
It, of course, must be stressed that Guimaraes was not suggesting that either of these will happen any time soon.
Guimaraes has been pushed to join Vasco
Back in October, Brazil defender Paulo Henrique revealed that he wanted Guimaraes to join him at Vasco.
He said: “There’s Bruno Guimaraes and Richarlison, who are Vasco fans. I’m trying to get them both to join Vasco.”
A return to Brazil at some point in his career would be fitting, bringing him full circle after moving to Europe as a very young man.
However, Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle want to hold contract talks with Guimaraes, with his current deal set to expire in 2028.
Players are expected to leave Newcastle this summer and few departures would be quite as painful as seeing Guimaraes go. Staying for another few years before returning to Brazil would be the perfect end to the story.
