The month of May could be the beginning of the end for Callum Wilson at Newcastle United.
Wilson joined Newcastle United from Bournemouth in 2020 and has proven an excellent player over the years, albeit with one obvious caveat.
The striker has frequently missed games through injury during his time at St James’ Park. The arrival of Alexander Isak has also seen him drop down the pecking order, while Wilson’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Indeed, Wilson has been told to earn a new contract at Newcastle. Should he remain fit, the 33-year-old is a logical back-up for Isak, particularly with Eddie Howe’s side due to play European football next season. A proven Premier League striker, there would be some benefit in keeping him.
However, the writing could well be on the wall following reports from The Daily Mail.
Callum Wilson contract latest at Newcastle United
According to Craig Hope’s report, there was a clause in Wilson’s contract in regard to appearances.
Had he made a select number of them, a clause would have been triggered that would have seen his deal extended.
Still, despite making 19 appearances this season, it’s claimed that the number needed to activate the clause will not be met.

Newcastle United already eyeing Callum Wilson’s replacement
There would be a certain logic in keeping the former England international, who has spent most of his career working under Howe.
The injuries, however, cannot be ignored.
No matter what happens with Wilson this summer, Newcastle are likely to need a new striker anyway. They will be playing some kind of European football next season, placing an even greater strain on Isak. Will Osula is another option but remains untested.
Newcastle are interested in signing Liam Delap this summer, after his successful season on an individual basis for Ipswich. Perhaps he will be the man to step into Wilson’s shoes.
