It’s no secret that Newcastle United are looking for a new midfielder in the January transfer window, and by the sounds of it, one potential target is very much available.
With Joelinton out of form, it’s said Newcastle United want to shake things up in the middle of the park as soon as possible.
Pretend you’re Newcastle United’s sporting director, where are you spending straight away?
Ross Wilson has given the green light to January signings at Newcastle United…
A new midfielder is top of the list for Eddie Howe, and a vast number of targets have been mentioned in conjunction with the Magpies.
Experienced heads like Scott McTominay and Conor Gallagher have been put forward, while younger options like Kees Smit and Kevin Danois are also on Newcastle’s radar. Now, a new, very exciting target has emerged.

Alex Toth’s agent speaks candidly
Speaking to Hungarian outlet Mandiner, Toth’s agent, Bence Papp, was more than open in discussing the details of the young midfielder’s future, and suggested we will see a big move in the near future. Whether that is in January or in the summer, is all that is up for debate, it seems.
Papp said: “The international press is also interested in the possible transfer of Alex. He has been mentioned among the midfielders with the greatest potential, showing his abilities both for Ferencvaros and in the national team.
“Perhaps no young Hungarian player playing in Hungary has ever been talked about as much as he is now. This is clearly to his and Ferencvaros’ credit.
“Naturally, I do not want to comment on the rumours, but I can tell you that it is worth monitoring his situation. Due to the dynamics of the market, I can’t say whether he will change clubs this winter or next summer.”
Papp didn’t mention any specific destination for Toth, but he played up the potential profile of this impending transfer as something that could be historic for Hungarian football. It’s thought a £13m fee will be involved in any deal.
He added: “We’re not giving away anything if we say that this will happen in the summer at the latest. I can make that statement, because there is an interest in him that I don’t think has been seen in the last 10 years around a young Hungarian player playing in Hungary.
“This transfer – which could take place in the summer at the latest – will fundamentally change the perception of Hungarian football on the international market.”
Alex Toth fits the bill for Newcastle United
If what Ross Wilson said about Newcastle’s transfer plans is true, Alex Toth is very much the kind of player the club is looking at now.
Newcastle want to find fresh, young talent from abroad. That’s with a view to either developing them into first-team players, or into sellable assets to generate profit.
How would you actually feel if Newcastle United DIDN’T sign a player in January?!
By the sounds of things, Toth is a player ready to excel at the top level already. He’s come through the Ferencvaros youth system and is obviously now ready for his next move.
The 20-year-old has two assists and one goal from 12 games this season. He’s also capable of playing deeper in midfield or in more advanced positions, something Eddie Howe would be keen to see from any player.
Toth is a brilliant passer of the ball, both in terms of his vision and his execution of a range of different plays. He’s the kind of creative spark Newcastle — or indeed any Premier League team — would pay big money for, and £13m could end up being a bargain.
