Strange how it's all played out

Alexander Isak’s struggles at Liverpool since leaving Newcastle United are perhaps predictable.

Isak did not undergo a full pre-season as he pushed for a move away from Newcastle United during the summer transfer window.

While these are early days yet, Isak has only scored one goal for Liverpool in six games thus far.

It would be foolish not to expect a player that good to turn things around. For now, however, Newcastle fans can be forgiven for revelling in his relatively poor start.

Newcastle didn’t expect Isak to be fully fit until after the October international break, so reserving judgment is wise.

Isak left in September, but it seems he wasn’t fully in the picture at Newcastle long before then.

Newcastle United coaches said they couldn’t get through to Alexander Isak

According to The Daily Mail, some of the Newcastle United coaching staff noticed a change behind the scenes even last season.

Where Isak was once eager to work with them, the report claims that figures behind the scenes felt a distance.

In fact, one insider is quoted as saying “We can’t get near him”, long before he actually started training away from the rest of the group to force a move away.

It goes on to suggest that people close to Isak think he “would not be bothered in the slightest” about all the drama that went alongside him refusing to play for the club.

Arne Slot piles the pressure onto Alexander Isak after messy Newcastle exit

Isak is also in poor form for Sweden as he counts the cost of his actions over the course of the summer.

The striker may feel justified. He got what he wanted and perhaps expected there to be some teething problems along the way. If he kicks on from here, few outside of Newcastle will remember all that happened.

However, it now seems as if even Liverpool manager Arne Slot wants action.

On Friday, the Reds boss said: “Alexander Isak has had his 5/6 weeks of pre-season… so fitness wise he’s close to the level he should be. We can judge him in a fair way from now on”.

Isak has not scored a Premier League goal since he bagged a penalty for Newcastle away at Brighton in May.
