The summer transfer window was relatively successful for Newcastle United, but it appears that Eddie Howe is already preparing to make January additions.
It has barely been two weeks since the transfer window closed, but the Magpies are being linked with moves for players to improve their squad in January.
Eddie Howe will be pleased with the additions he made during the summer transfer window, with record signing Nick Woltemade scoring on his debut and Anthony Elanga getting minutes under his belt before a busy period in the season.
However, Newcastle United are already without two of their new signings, with striker Yoane Wissa and midfielder Jacob Ramsey both out for around a month with knee and ankle injuries, respectively.
Midfield is a position that looks particularly weak outside of the starting XI. A young and growing Lewis Miley and an out-of-sorts Joe Willock are Howe’s only options. With that in mind, a new transfer report has shared that Newcastle are keeping tabs on one Premier League ace who was keen on a move away in the summer.

Newcastle United monitoring Kobbie Mainoo’s situation at Manchester United
It has been a strange start to the season for young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has been effectively left out in the cold by Ruben Amorim.
The 21-year-old has played just three games in all competitions this season, and is yet to make a start for the Red Devils in the Premier League.
Before the end of the summer window, it was revealed that Mainoo had asked to leave Man United on loan to allow himself the opportunity to get regular minutes elsewhere. However, that request was blocked, and Mainoo stayed at Old Trafford.
Geordie Boot Boys revealed Newcastle’s initial interest in Mainoo, and it has since been stated by TalkSPORT that the Magpies are still tracking the England international.
The report adds that Howe is a big fan of Mainoo, and would consider testing Man United’s resolve if he keeps getting left out in the cold. Mainoo’s Man United teammates have also reportedly been left feeling ‘perplexed’ at Amorim’s decision to leave the midfielder out of the starting XI this season.

Kobbie Mainoo could learn a lot from Newcastle United’s midfielders
Newcastle fans were keen on signing Mainoo when initial reports of his unrest surfaced. The midfielder has already experienced so much despite being just 21.
Mainoo was part of the England squad that finished runners-up in the European Championships in 2024, and even started in the final against Spain. It is clear that Amorim is not too keen on using Mainoo right now, so a move in January may be the best option for both clubs.
Newcastle’s midfield is brimming with quality. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are comfortably one of the best midfields in the Premier League, so Mainoo would be learning from a good group of people on Tyneside.
Additionally, Howe could get Mainoo back in the England picture if he ended up going to Newcastle. He was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s most recent squad to play Andorra and Serbia, likely because of his lack of minutes for Man United.
Mainoo likes to control the game, so he would likely be played as a deeper midfielder, though he is still young enough to adapt to a different style of play.
