Odysseas Vlachodimos may not have a future at Newcastle United, but he has dazzled on international duty with Greece.
Newcastle United sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest in 2024, in what has proven to be a rather painful sale.
As Newcastle attempted to navigate the Premier League’s PSR, Anderson departed, and Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived at St James’ Park.
The Greek stopper joined from Forest as both teams attempted to raise funds before the PSR deadline.
Vlachodimos was a curious addition to the Newcastle squad, and it’s no great surprise that he has barely featured for the Magpies.
Odysseas Vlachodimos shines in Greece win over Scotland
The 31-year-old played just once for Newcastle last season and has been sent on loan to Sevilla this season.
Vlachodimos has caught the eye for Sevilla this season and has taken that form into international action.
The Magpies loanee started in goal for Greece as they faced Scotland in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday night.
Vlachodimos almost bagged an assist in the first seven minutes, but it was his goalkeeping ability that really stood out.
Bournemouth’s Ben Gannon Doak couldn’t beat Vlachodimos in the first half, before Greece took a 3-0 lead.
Scotland pulled two goals back, and Vlachodimos stood up to deny Ryan Christie a leveller.
Vlachodimos pulled off a stunning save to keep out Scott McTominay’s close-range effort, and even diverted John McGinn’s pass away from goal as Scotland looked destined to equalise.
To put it quite simply, Vlachodimos secured the win for Greece with some fine saves, though their World Cup qualifying hopes are over regardless.
Greek media on Odysseas Vlachodimos
The Greek media raved about Vlachodimos as he turned in an outstanding performance, especially in the second half.
“He may have conceded two goals, but he was not responsible for them. He was excellent overall and in the 79th minute he instinctively made the save of the game, proving that he has been in great form lately. He held on to the 3-2 lead in stoppage time,” wrote SDNA.
Newsit added that Vlachodimos made ‘incredible saves’, while Ta Nea hailed his ‘tremendous performance’.
Vlachodimos is only on loan at Sevilla, but he is unlikely to have any kind of future at Newcastle next summer.
Vlachodimos only played once last season, and that was before Newcastle brought in Aaron Ramsdale on loan.
Whether Ramsdale’s move becomes permanent or not, Eddie Howe will have little interest in bringing Vlachodimos back in as Nick Pope’s competition.
A permanent exit is best for all parties in 2026, and more performances like this will only help drum up more interest in his signature.
