Newcastle United’s major transfer mistake could play right into Pep Guardiola’s hands.
Back in the summer of 2024, Newcastle United sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.
The harsh reality is that while Newcastle did not want to sell Anderson, they didn’t absolutely have to.
Yes, the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) forced their hand somewhat but the fact is that the club could have sold other players.
If Newcastle United were to make ONE signing in January? Who would you hope it is? Comment below
They actively decided to cash in on Anderson and Yankuba Minteh and they must now regret that.
Jamie Carragher says selling Anderson was a “quick fix” for Newcastle and it’s hard to disagree.
Hindsight is course a wonderful gift, but they sold the future while banking on the present.
Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle want to re-sign Anderson but, sadly, it seems as if Manchester City are ready to make their move.
Manchester City want to sign Elliot Anderson
According to The Daily Mail, Guardiola is keen to bring Anderson to the Etihad Stadium next summer.
Both he and City sporting director Hugo Viana are thought to be keen to beat Manchester United and Liverpool to the 23-year-old’s services.
Viana, of course, is a former Newcastle United player himself.
Though a January move is unlikely for Anderson, it’s believed that he could be available for £80million next summer.
The report adds that Anderson is simply too expensive for Newcastle at this stage.
Imagine a world where Newcastle United are FORCED to sell one player in January. Who should it be? Let us know!
Newcastle United immediately regretted selling Elliot Anderson
Howe confirmed Newcastle knew they sold Anderson too cheaply straight away.
Forest are believed to have paid around £35million for the midfielder, though Newcastle quickly repaid most of that by signing goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos from the City Ground club.
While the PSR rules actively make selling academy players a tempting thing to do, Newcastle don’t get a free pass here.
They could have sold Anthony Gordon to Liverpool last summer to answer their PSR needs.
Clearly, they didn’t have the benefit of seeing Gordon’s decline back then, but they still chose to get rid of Anderson.
It’s important to remember that. PSR issues are what they are but it’s a choice the club actively made.
