Newcastle United vs Sunderland will not be black and white vs red and white on Sunday.
The Magpies are heading to the Stadium of Light for the Tyne-Wear derby, but it does not appear as though they will be wearing their traditional black and white stripes.
A social media post from the club suggests that Newcastle will wear their third kit against Sunderland, with Eddie Howe’s players set to don their navy and orange jersey on Wearside.
It is a decision that has infuriated a lot of Newcastle United fans on social media, although there is at least one silver lining from the decision.
It doesn’t look like we’re wearing black and white on Sunday – how do you feel about that?⚫⚪
At least it's not the green kit, think of it like that!
Newcastle United fans are not happy about not wearing black and white against Sunderland
Toon fans on X have given their verdict on the decision to wear the third kit when for Sunderland vs Newcastle United on Sunday.
While there is universal disappointment that the black and white home shirt will not be used, the fact they are not going to be wearing the green jersey is at least being celebrated.
“Blue kit, games gone, all about the stripes on derby day,” wrote this supporter.
Another Newcastle United fan added: “No B&W for derby day is nonsense but at least it isn’t the green kit.”
That sentiment was shared by a third supporter who wrote: “Not wearing the home kit is very annoying, but at least it’s not the green one.”

Finally, this Toon supporter posted: “Get the home kit on man.”

This is our predicted Newcastle XI to face Sunderland! Would you make any changes?
I would start Miley, but I think Howe will go with Joelinton.
Why Newcastle United are wearing their away kit vs Sunderland
There have been plenty of occasions in the past when Newcastle United have worn their home kit against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. They did it most recently in January 2024 when Eddie Howe’s side won 3-0 in the FA Cup.
On that day, Newcastle wore white shorts with their home shirt. On top of that, the black and white stripes were all over the shirt, whereas this season’s offering from Adidas has a white patch on the back for the players’ names and numbers amid Premier League regulations.
It is the same for Sunderland, who also have a white patch separating their red and white stripes on the back of their shirt.
That is likely the reason why Newcastle United are not allowed to wear their home shirt on Sunday, with so much white proving to be a kit clash.
