'So obvious': Gary Neville can't get his head around what happened to Newcastle on Saturday

The Anthony Gordon penalty debate has continued in the wake of Newcastle United’s draw with Chelsea.

The impressive Gordon was denied a penalty for Newcastle United against Chelsea when Trevoh Chalobah barged into him in the box.

VAR did look at the incident but decided not to award a spot-kick, claiming that the Blues defender was merely shielding the ball.

If you could go back in time and tell Eddie Howe one thing during his half-time team talk, what would it be?!

It was a very strange decision on a day where Newcastle could feasibly have been awarded three penalties, with Wesley Fofana lucky to escape a handball call.

Reece James also brought down Harvey Barnes towards the end of the game, with some suggesting that should have been looked at.

Still, the Gordon one is the standout and Neville was lost for words that a penalty wasn’t given.

Gary Neville claims Newcastle United should have had a penalty against Chelsea

Neville was reflecting on the action across the Premier League this weekend when speaking on his Sky Sports podcast.

The former Manchester United defender admitted he couldn’t believe that Newcastle weren’t given a penalty following Chalobah’s body check on Gordon.

“That was a penalty on Gordon, the one by Chalobah where he barged him,” he said.

“I mean, something sometimes is so obvious. Crazy challenge, so that was a bit unlucky.”

AGREE OR DISAGREE: Eddie Howe hasn’t had it easy this season, but he should be doing much better

Premier League statement on Anthony Gordon just isn’t good enough for Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe could not understand the VAR decision against Chelsea when the Premier League’s official statement on their reasoning was read back to him.

It is a source of huge frustration. Gordon has scored all of his penalties this season and that would have been a huge moment in the match.

To pretend Newcastle weren’t architects of their downfall would be unwise. Clearly, the fact they keep dropping points from winning positions is a problem that has lasted for months.

Still, and while there is no guarantee Gordon would have scored it, getting the penalty at that point in the match would no doubt have swung the momentum back into Newcastle’s favour.

There are big issues about this Newcastle team but they can count themselves unlucky there.
