It was an emotional night at St James’ Park, one that saw supporters rally around the iconic Kevin Keegan by singing his name following the dreadful news that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Schar was stretchered off in the second half after a collision with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Fabian Schar suffered ankle injury for Newcastle United against Leeds

The Newcastle United manager was asked about the Swiss defender after the game.

Howe confirmed that Schar, one of Newcastle’s most reliable players this season, appears to have suffered an ankle injury.

When asked about the defender, Howe said (via Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World on social media platform X): “He’s in hospital, I believe, at the moment, he’s got an ankle problem. It doesn’t look good for him, we hope it’s not as serious as it looks. We send him our love.”

Major blow for Newcastle United and Fabian Schar

Hopefully, Schar can recover quickly.

Newcastle will hope for good news on Schar, who has been one of their key players this season.

The defender has stepped up in the absence of Sven Botman, who has suffered with injuries himself.

With Dan Burn also out injured, Newcastle could do with as many defenders as possible, particularly after a very difficult evening for Malick Thiaw against Leeds.

Schar has been in brilliant form for Newcastle this season and the idea of missing him for any great length of time is a huge concern, especially in a very busy month like January.

The defender is out of contract at Newcastle at the end of the season, too, and there has been no official update on his long-term future.
