Newcastle United appear ready to give Lewis Hall some much-needed help by making an offer for a new signing in the January transfer window.
Indeed, the Newcastle United squad is not blessed with options at left-back.
Hall is one of Newcastle’s most important players and the drop-off in performances without him in the side is a major concern.
YOU are in control – who are you signing?
It's obvious what Newcastle United need in January. Now you have the money to spend. Use it wisely!
Dan Burn has done a decent enough job in that role in Hall’s absence but clearly isn’t fully comfortable.
Alex Murphy hasn’t been trusted by Eddie Howe often enough and while Tino Livramento is capable of playing there, he’s needed at right-back.
Geordie Boot Boys have argued that Newcastle need to sign a new full-back and it appears as if the club are considering doing exactly that.
Newcastle United consider offer for Dayann Methalie
According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie.
The 19-year-old has been operating as a left wing-back for the French side this season and has duly earned rave reviews.
The report suggests that sources in France claim that Newcastle are now considering making an offer to Toulouse.
I’m one of Newcastle’s strangest January signings, but who am I?
Methalie is under contract until the summer of 2030 but that is seemingly not likely to deter Newcastle.
Having another option at left-back could be ideal for both Howe and Hall.
Hall is a key player for Newcastle but even he cannot play every single game. Having more suitable back-up can only be a good thing for all involved.
Dayann Methalie player profile explained amid Newcastle United transfer interest
Back in November, Ligue 1’s official website ran a player profile on Methalie.
They hailed him as “another academy gem [who] has burst into the spotlight” while also commenting on the “pace, power and personality” he’s brought to the Toulouse side.
This season – his first genuine campaign in professional senior football – Methalie has only been dribbled past three times.
On average, he completes 1.46 dribbles per game while winning 5.2 ground duels over the same period.
Clearly, Ligue 1 is very different to the Premier League but Methalie certainly looks like a player on the up.
Presumably, he’d be arriving as a back-up option, so would have plenty of time to develop under Howe, who has a proven track record in yielding improvements out of players.
Newcastle are ready to sign players based in Europe as part of a recruitment revamp.
This particular deal looks like a good place to start.
