Let's hope!

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle United to constantly evolve their squad in upcoming transfer windows.

For the first time in three years, Newcastle United are expected to have money to spend in the January transfer window.

Clearly, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the club will strengthen in the New Year sales but at least having the option to do so will be a major boost for Howe, who hasn’t made a January signing since 2023.

The January transfer window is a notoriously difficult trading period for clubs, with prices generally inflated and top players not always readily available.

Still, Howe believes every window can offer the club an opportunity to improve his squad at Newcastle

Eddie Howe outlines Newcastle United’s stance on January transfer window

The Newcastle United manager was asked about plans for January during Friday’s pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham.

While he admitted discussions are yet to take place over potential targets, Howe stressed that he’d love the club to be in a position to constantly evolve their squad during every transfer window.

That doesn’t always mean the club will make huge signings every time the transfer window opens but small additions to the squad could help keep things consistently fresh.

“Every transfer window for me is an opportunity to invest,” he said (via The Northern Echo).

“We will look at it and try and make the best decisions for the future of the club knowing what we have available in that window and then the following windows. We will try to make the best decisions in that way.

“I would love to get to a situation where we can invest in every window. Not necessarily big outlays, sometimes small outlays to keep the fluidity in the squad and keep building forward, but we haven’t had those discussions yet.”

What Newcastle United could actually do in the January transfer market

Newcastle could target younger players in January as they look to plan for the future on Tyneside.

Indeed, on average, Howe has named one of the oldest teams in the Premier League this season.

At some point, the stars of the present will move on. They will either retire or leave the club over the next few years.

As such, the club need to work on the next generation. Newcastle continue to make impressive signings at youth level, but the benefits of that will not be seen for years.

They need players who can bridge the gap and January hopefully provides an opportunity to bring some into the club.
