The January transfer window is not far away now and it seems Newcastle United already have one player they can sell as Joe Willock becomes a target.

Eddie Howe has some big decisions to make, be it in January or the summer, and it all boils down to the balance of the Newcastle United midfield.

Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?

So far this season, Joelinton has been questioned, people want more from Bruno Guimaraes, and it’s clear reinforcements are needed.

In that regard, a new Newcastle transfer story is taking shape, involving the future of Joe Willock.

Crystal Palace are targeting Joe Willock

As per a report from The Telegraph, Crystal Palace will attempt to sign Willock in the January transfer window. It is thought Newcastle will want close to the £21m they paid for the midfielder in an attempt to stay in line with PSR regulations.

The report claims Eddie Howe would be reluctant to sell Willock in the middle of the season, but with Willock dropping down the pecking order at Newcastle, there’s every chance the player could move on.

With injuries and new signings like Jacob Ramsey, Willock’s future is in doubt at Newcastle. And, with Howe trying to sign Kees Smit, the plan is ultimately to guarantee him first-team football and selling Willock would go a long way towards ensuring that happens.

It’s said Newcastle will need to act fast to get the Smit deal done, and that may mean that Palace get a quick response from the Magpies regarding Willock ahead of the impending transfer window.

Selling Joe Willock is a no-brainer, Newcastle United need better options

Willock did start the Champions League clash with Marseille last night, and it was actually one of his best performances in a Newcastle shirt for months.

But, due to all the aforementioned issues like injuries and competition for places, it’s clear that Willock does not offer enough to this Newcastle squad to warrant keeping him around if an offer does come in.

The one player who Newcastle United should sign in January is…

Kees Smit is a definite upgrade on Willock, and seems to be the top option for Newcastle in the midfield area. Whether it’s the Dutch youngster, or Elliot Anderson, or indeed Scott McTominay who joins Newcastle in the near future, Willock will end up being surplus to requirements.

If Newcastle can get their money back and fund his replacement, Willock being sold is a no-brainer.
