Bruno Guimaraes could not inspire Newcastle United to victory against Marseille.

The 28-year-old was outstanding during Newcastle United’s win over Manchester City on Saturday, but he and his teammates could not follow that performance up a few days later in France.

Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Marseille, with a disastrous five minute spell immediately after half-time handing Roberto De Zerbi’s side victory.

It was a hugely frustrating night in the Champions League for the Magpies, who have now lost four games in a row away from home. That will enrage Eddie Howe, while it is even more infuriating for the travelling Toon Army who spend a lot of money supporting the team far and wide.

Who was the most DISAPPOINTING Newcastle player vs Marseille?

Following the final whistle, the Newcastle United squad did show their appreciation to the supporters that had made the challenging journey to Marseille.

Howe, his players and the coaching staff applauded the fans as they always do, despite letting a one goal lead slip for a third consecutive away game.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes took his appreciation for the fans one step further, giving his shirt to a young supporter. It was a moment of class from the Brazil international, who will have been disappointed with his performance at the Stade Velodrome.

Giving his shirt away to a supporter will not change the result, but it at least showed Bruno’s willingness to show gratitude to the supporters who had travelled from Tyneside.

Bruno Guimaraes’ post-Brentford message still rings true

After the game, Bruno said Newcastle United were ‘sloppy’ against Marseille. That could not be more true, with a five-minute capitulation turning the game on its head.

It was another case of poor game management from the Magpies, but it is curious to wonder what would have happened had it not been for that crazy Nick Pope error.

What was Nick Pope thinking?

Regardless, it is another defeat for Newcastle United, who once again need another response.

There will be more moments of reflection, and Bruno’s message to supporters after the loss to Brentford before the international break still rings true following the Champions League calamity.

“In almost four years at this club, we’re going through perhaps one of the toughest moments,” he wrote.

“Just like in life, we can’t always be at the top. But something football has taught me over all these years is that in times like this, we need to stick together and never let go of each other’s hands.

“The first part of the season didn’t go as expected, and now, after this break, we need to find the chemistry that has guided us all this time until now. I can assure you that we are just as sad as you, the fans.”
