Newcastle United were well and truly denied a clear penalty at the weekend, and Alan Shearer has not finished venting about it yet.

With the score poised at 2-1, Newcastle United thought they had the chance to make it three when Anthony Gordon was clattered by Trevoh Chalobah in the box.

For some reason, the referee ignored this and VAR decided not to intervene. Mark Clattenburg said Newcastle deserved a penalty, and pretty much everyone in the game agrees.

Alan Shearer definitely does and he’s gone in hard on the referee, Andy Madley, with his latest comments while speaking to Gary Lineker.

What Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker said about Anthony Gordon penalty incident

Shearer initially criticised the referee at the time, before offering a more in-depth, scathing verdict of Madley’s decision after the game.

Now, on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football, Shearer said: “I mean the penalty decision that they never got was absolutely ridiculous, honestly.”

Gary Lineker added: “It was a penalty, it was. He [Chalobah] just rammed [Gordon] him straight off, didn’t he?”

Shearer is clearly fuming about the incident, and replied: “Even the tweet the Premier League put out, and I know it’s what VAR are telling them, but to say he was shielding the ball?

“Rubbish! Shielding the ball? It was as clear a foul as you’re ever going to see. I’d love to know how you’ve got three professionals, you’ve got the referee on the pitch and you’ve got two VAR officials looking at that, slowing it down, and thinking, ‘Yeah, that’s alright, wasn’t a foul.'”

How bad was the decision not to give Anthony Gordon a penalty after he was brought down by Trevoh Chalobah?! 😡

Looked like a clear peno!

Newcastle United have had their fair share of penalties

They say these kinds of decisions have a tendency to even themselves out over the course of the season. Newcastle will certainly be hoping that’s the case after this blatant mistake.

But, if we look at the numbers so far this season, Newcastle have been given more penalties than a lot of teams in the Premier League. The Magpies actually have been awarded three spot-kicks this term, with only Crystal Palace (4), Man United (4), and Brentford (7) having more.

The good thing is, Newcastle have converted all three of their penalties. Between Nick Woltemade’s stunner against Nottingham Forest and Anthony Gordon scoring a couple, at least we know the Magpies are making the most of their opportunities when they get them.
