There is not much of interest left in this season’s Premier League but Newcastle United’s battle for a Champions League place is going to the wire.
Liverpool have the Premier League title sewn up and the three relegated sides were long doomed but four teams are still battling it out for a place in next season’s Champions League campaign.
Newcastle United once looked nailed on to return to Europe’s premier competition, yet a couple of dodgy results combined with Manchester City’s late resurgence mean nothing is guaranteed.
Eddie Howe’s side are still in a good position but they must pick up vital victories in their three remaining fixtures to guarantee their Champions League spot.
The top five places will ensure qualification this year but Newcastle are still competing with Manchester City, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa for one of them.
Here’s how the five sides’ remaining games compare.

The Champions League race is tantalisingly poised, with just four points separating 3rd from 7th in the Premier League table.
Manchester City currently occupy third – just three points behind Arsenal – after their upturn in form, though even they haven’t set their place in stone just yet.

Who has the easiest Champions League race run-in?
Manchester City appear to have turned a corner in a difficult campaign in which a surprising defeat has never been far away, after winning seven of their last nine matches in all competitions and drawing the other two.
Pep Guardiola’s side have the easiest set of fixtures remaining, too, so they should secure third, leaving two places for the other four sides.
Even if Forest’s form is floundering, they do have two comfortable fixtures to come against relegated Leicester City and 17th-placed West Ham. If they can win both, that will leave a blockbuster final day fixture with Chelsea, which could see the winner take all.
There’s also the chance that, by the last set of games, a draw will be enough for both Chelsea and Forest to qualify at Newcastle’s expense.
The Magpies need to ensure they don’t risk that by winning their fixtures.
A home match with Chelsea on Sunday is absolutely massive, with a win giving the Magpies a three-point advantage with two games left.
Arsenal away is tough but Mikel Arteta’s side aren’t in great nick themselves after being knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals, while Everton at home on the final day is favourable.
Villa still have an outside chance of getting into the top five, too, given their final two games are against lowly Manchester United and Tottenham, both of whom will be saving themselves for the Europa League final.
Newcastle have a tougher set of games than all their competitors but know if they win them, they will reach the Champions League.
