Alexander Isak could make his Liverpool debut on Wednesday night after leaving Newcastle United for £125million.
As Newcastle United prepare to face Barcelona in the Champions League, Isak is getting ready for his own European adventure.
Having sat out Liverpool’s win over Burnley on Sunday, the Sweden international could make his debut for his new club against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.
It will be a big night for Isak, as he will have ambitions of going the distance in the Champions League with Liverpool. That is not something he would have expected to do at Newcastle United.
Ahead of his potential debut, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has put a little bit more pressure on Isak’s shoulders.
Jamie Carragher backs Alexander Isak to be the Champions League’s top scorer
As the new Champions League campaign gets set to begin, pundits are making their predictions for European football’s biggest tournament.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher was asked to name who he thinks will be the top scorer in this season’s Champions League.
“I’ll go for Isak [as top scorer] for Liverpool,” he said.
“I think Liverpool will go close. That would be a great final, Barcelona [vs] Liverpool.”
Elsewhere, Micah Richards and David Beckham both backed Kylian Mbappe to score the highest number of goals. Beckham also backed Newcastle to surprise people, as they get set for their European return.
How Alexander Isak performed in the Champions League for Newcastle United
During his Newcastle United career, Isak competed in the Champions League once. That was in the 2023/24 season.
It was a memorable campaign for the Magpies, drawn in the group of death and going toe-to-toe with European football’s elite. Sadly, the journey ended at the earliest opportunity with Newcastle coming bottom of their group.
While Isak scored 25 goals in all competitions that season, only one of his strikes came in the Champions League. He made five Champions League appearances for Newcastle, with his single goal coming in the 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital.
That is the only goal that Isak has ever scored in the Champions League, having only made one more appearance in the competition during his entire career. That came when he was at Borussia Dortmund.
