It is difficult to take the summer transfer window at Newcastle United in isolation from what happened at Liverpool.
Liverpool, of course, went out and signed Hugo Ekitike from under Newcastle United’s noses before they eventually signed Alexander Isak too.
Though Newcastle have since found success in replacing Isak with Nick Woltemade all while the Sweden star is struggling at Liverpool, there’s little doubt that the Reds did a number on the Magpies.
Who is the one player you were FURIOUS with Newcastle United for selling? Go back as far as you want!
Clearly, things haven’t worked out that way on the pitch, but it was a painful few months for Toon supporters – particularly those on social media.
As if Liverpool hadn’t already done enough damage, Kop icon Steven Gerrard thinks they should have signed yet another Newcastle player too.
Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool should have signed Anthony Gordon
Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard expressed his belief that Liverpool would have been wise to replace Luis Diaz with Anthony Gordon earlier this summer.
Diaz, of course, joined Bayern Munich from the Reds as Arne Slot completely revamped his attacking line with the signings of Isak, Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
Gordon almost joined Liverpool in 2024 but eventually stayed at St James’ Park and has since signed a new deal.
The England international has recently hit a purple patch after previously struggling, scoring three goals in his last three games.
“I think that’s [signing a winger] where they need to do a bit in January, the balance of the squad, the recruitment team at Liverpool are unbelievable by the way,” he said.
“The recruitment team is top, but the squad is imbalanced, losing Diaz, not getting someone to come in, I know they were linked with Anthony Gordon, there’s a lot of pressure on Gakpo to deliver, there isn’t an ideal replacement.”
YOU are in control – who are you signing?
It's obvious what Newcastle United need in January. Now you have the money to spend. Use it wisely!
Why Liverpool could actually sign Anthony Gordon next summer
Gordon is a boyhood Liverpool fan and was clearly tempted by the prospect of a move to the club last year.
That’s only natural. While he wasn’t at his best last season, he did at least get his head down and work, something Isak simply didn’t do a year later.
Worryingly, Gordon is believed to have a release clause in his Newcastle contract.
Now that he’s in good form again, perhaps something like that will be tempting to onlookers – particularly if Liverpool are going to rebuild next season.
Clearly, there’s no suggestion that they will definitely come in, but a potential release clause would leave Newcastle somewhat open.
