Newcastle United could certainly do with at least a few signings in some key areas during the January transfer window.

While the 2026 January transfer window isn’t expected to be particularly busy at Newcastle United following a significant summer outlay, signings could still be made.

Indeed, Eddie Howe’s squad has looked stretched at times, and Newcastle’s January transfer budget is much bigger than it has been in previous seasons, given they haven’t made a mid-season signing in three years now.

Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle are considering a move for a new winger, while the club reportedly also want to strengthen in central midfield and in defence.

Pundit Peter Crouch believes a new centre-back could be in order for Newcastle in January.

Peter Crouch tells Newcastle United to sign a new centre-back

The former Liverpool and England striker was asked to name which position in which several Premier League clubs needed to strengthen in January by TNT Sports on their TikTok channel.

When it came to Newcastle, Crouch said: “Centre-back.”

Newcastle did sign Malick Thiaw from AC Milan in August to huge success, but could perhaps do with a fresh addition there.

Fabian Schar is out of contract this summer, while Dan Burn is currently injured. Both of those players are in their mid-30s anyway, so hardly represent long-term options.

Jamaal Lascelles could leave Newcastle in January, while Sven Botman continues to struggle with injuries.

What will decide Newcastle United’s transfer plans in January

Eddie Howe has already admitted that Newcastle’s injury situation will largely dictate what happens in the window this month.

Before Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace, Howe said: “If everyone is available we have a really well balanced squad and it would be difficult to improve. If we don’t and if we lose players, especially defensively, that leaves a totally different opinion.”

Newcastle have recently suffered a spate of defensive injuries, with the likes of Burn, Botman, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth all ruled out.

As such, the club will likely take stock of their injury situation – particularly defensively – before making some of their recruitment decisions.

Newcastle plan for Botman and Thiaw to be their starting centre-backs for years to come but, at some point, they will need to bring in fresh faces.
