Alan Shearer will have a close eye on Eddie Howe’s starting lineup when Newcastle United face Everton.

The Magpies are off to Merseyside on Saturday, as they attempt to fix their horrendous away record. It got worse on Tuesday night, as Newcastle United lost to Marseille in the Champions League.

The catalyst for defeat was Nick Pope’s error, as he needlessly raced off his line to try and challenge Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. After his mistake, Pope tried to put Aubameyang off, but it was all in vain.

It was a costly error from the 33-year-old, and now Alan Shearer thinks Pope is at risk of losing his place in the Newcastle United starting XI.

Alan Shearer unimpressed with Nick Pope ahead of Everton vs Newcastle United

Shearer has addressed Newcastle United’s goalkeeper situation on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

While the Newcastle United legend has not said that Aaron Ramsdale should replace Pope, he does insist that Eddie Howe has a ‘big decision’ to make before facing Everton.

“Another error from Nick Pope,” he said.

“Not the first this season.

“He’s got a big decision to make now, Eddie, at the weekend, because Pope’s done three or four mistakes that have cost Newcastle.”

Shearer added: “It was disappointing. I thought after Saturday and the performance against Man City, I thought here we go, we can expect this all the time. But away from home, they’ve got to find the balance.”

Aaron Ramsdale could soon question Newcastle United future

Since joining the club on loan, Ramsdale has been praised for his attitude behind the scenes.

However, he may soon start to strongly wonder what he must do to get a consistent run of games in the starting XI. His only starts have come in the Carabao Cup, with Ramsdale impressing against Spurs in the previous round.

For the majority of the season so far, Pope has done well and deserved his place in the side. However, errors have crept into his game, with three major mistakes costing Newcastle in their previous three away games.

Despite his mistakes, it has been reported that Pope is likely to start against Everton on Saturday. If that does happen, Ramsdale may begin to question whether he will ever get a chance.
