Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Marc Guehi this summer, but they have just found a much cheaper alternative.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has already dealt with Crystal Palace while at the Magpies, but he will be hoping that negotiations are much smoother in the upcoming transfer window.

Newcastle United’s centre-backs have been brilliant this season, but the partnership of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are approaching the latter stages of their careers. The need for replacements will only become more of an issue the longer the club waits, so this summer is the perfect time to bring new faces in.

Sven Botman is expected to be the Magpies’ long-term successor to Burn, but Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is yet to find his ideal replacement for Schar.

Newcastle tried signing Marc Guehi last season, but several bids upwards of £70m were rejected by Crystal Palace. However, Guehi is expected to leave Palace this summer in favour of a move to a club with European football.

Guehi will cost Newcastle less than £50m this summer, but a new transfer report has stated that Mitchell could sign another ace for just £15m.

Newcastle United on ‘red alert’ over Wilfred Singo

AS Monaco defender Wilfred Singo has made a name for himself in Ligue 1 and European competition this season.

At just 24, Singo has already established himself as a regular in the Ivory Coast national team squad and has played consistent Champions League football.

This season has been no different, with Singo making six appearances in Europe’s top competition, scoring twice and bagging an assist.

His form has been noticed by Newcastle representatives who, according to Give Me Sport, have been impressed when sent out on scouting missions to watch him in action.

The report also states that Singo is valued in the region of £15m, a bargain fee for a player of his quality.

The 6ft 3in defender can play as either a left or right-sided centre-back, and even as a right-back. There is no doubt that Howe will be a big fan of Singo’s versatility. The 47-year-old likes to have players who can play in multiple positions across the park.

With the Magpies returning to European competition, Singo would bring a wealth of experience in those games if he joins.

Signing Singo would also mean that Howe has a handy replacement for Schar when the time comes to replace him.

Schar signed a new contract at Newcastle in April, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Newcastle have sold Lloyd Kelly to Juventus for a fee of around £14.8m. That would almost cover the cost of Singo if the Magpies opted to sign him this summer.

With Mitchell eyeing cheaper talent from abroad, this looks like a prime example of what he wants.
