Newcastle United’s pre-match music underwent another change ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The songs that Newcastle United play inside St James’ Park before a game have become a topic of debate in recent weeks, with the club opting to move away from tradition.

Ordinarily, Local Hero has blared out just moments before a home game kicks off. However, that had changed.

Newcastle United decided to play Local Hero before the players came out, opting to make Blaydon Races the last song before kick-off. The idea was so that fans would immediately be singing and chanting as the game got underway.

It was a controversial change, and one that the club now appears to have gone back on.

As the anticipation built towards Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham, Blaydon Races began to play.

It was then followed by Hey Jude, as the Newcastle United squad walked onto the pitch alongside Marco Silva’s side.

What came next was the Mark Knopfler classic Local Hero, which was the last song to play before Newcastle’s win over Fulham.

The club went back to their tried and tested playlist, in a move that delighted the purists inside St James’ Park.

Lewis Miley was Newcastle United’s local hero against Fulham

On the night that Newcastle United went back to playing Local Hero immediately before kick-off, it was fitting for Lewis Miley to score the winner.

The Newcastle United academy graduate made it 2-1 in the 92nd minute, flicking a Sandro Tonali corner into the back of the net to send the Magpies through to the final four.

Newcastle United will face Manchester City in the semi-final, as they continue their quest to defend the Carabao Cup.
