Anthony Gordon continued his run of good form, despite not being able to steer Newcastle to a win against Chelsea this weekend.
It was another case of points dropped for Newcastle United with a 2-0 lead thrown away in the second half at St. Jamesâ Park.
If you could go back in time and tell Eddie Howe one thing during his half-time team talk, what would it be?!
Nick Woltemade scored both of Newcastleâs goals in the first half, but it was the performance of Anthony Gordon that stole the show in our player ratings for the Chelsea game.
Gordon bagged an assist and ran Chelsea ragged throughout the 72 minutes on the pitch, and his captain did not hesitate to praise him after the game.
Anthony Gordon played a blinder vs Chelsea
Over on Instagram, Gordon shared a post about the match, writing: âGreat game of football. Ultimately should have won but a good performance to build on.â
Among the replies, a message from Bruno Guimaraes stood out, with the Newcastle skipper saying: âWhat a game you had.â Itâs a short and simple message, but the Brazilian is bang on the money.
Given Bruno has criticised his teammates of late, largely for their mentality on the pitch, it says a lot that he took the time to celebrate Gordonâs display.
Meanwhile, Jacob Ramsey also shared the love for Gordon, replying with a heart emoji.
How bad was the decision not to give Anthony Gordon a penalty after he was brought down by Trevoh Chalobah?! đĄ
Looked like a clear peno!
Anthony Gordonâs game in numbers
You only had to watch the game to know that Anthony Gordon played really well, but the numbers prove it, too.
As per Sofascore, Gordon generated 0.95 xG from his two shots on the day. He would probably have scored, too, if it wasnât for Newcastle being denied a âclearâ penalty.
We already mentioned his assist, too, but Gordon actually created two big chances with two key passes. His general passing could have been a bit better, though. Two of his five crosses were accurate, and only 81% of his 16 passes found their destination.
Gordonâs defensive work was really impressive. The winger won five of his six ground duels, and also registered three recoveries, one clearance, and won one tackle.
Itâs another clear sign that Gordonâs form is heading in the right direction. He looks back to his best, near enough, and most importantly, he looks hungry to keep improving.
