For the first time in what will be three years by that point, Newcastle United could well be active in the January transfer market.
Eddie Howe has not had the luxury of making a significant January transfer signing at Newcastle United since 2023, when Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby joined the club.
PSR issues have limited what the club have been able to do in the transfer market but, following the sale of Alexander Isak, things are different now.
Indeed, Newcastle will have money to spend in January 2026, offering a major boost to Howe.
The season is long and arduous and while the January transfer window is not exactly the ideal time in which to shop, potentially being able to draft in some mid-season reinforcement could help the Newcastle United manager.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie expects the club to be active.
Newcastle United predicted to make January transfer window signings
On Friday, Downie posted a video on YouTube.
He talked about Nick Pope’s contract extension and Newcastle’s imminent deal to sign Barnsley wonderkid Josh Kenchington.
Interestingly, Downie also suggested he expected Newcastle to be active when the January transfer window does open.
“I think January is going to be a really busy month for Newcastle,” he said.
“Even on the back of the summer, I think it’s going to be busy due to Alexander Isak leaving and not [being] fully replaced and [they’re] still light in certain positions.
“Newcastle have now got money burning a hole in their pocket following Isak’s sale. That will have done wonders for the club’s PSR situation.”
The player Newcastle United could sign in January
Howe has admitted Newcastle haven’t directly replaced Alexander Isak, even despite Nick Woltemade’s fine start to life at the club.
The injury to Yoane Wissa has exposed just how light Newcastle are on striking options. Woltemade can’t do it all himself and while William Osula has impressed, he remains untested.
Wissa, meanwhile, will be coming off a long lay-off and could be heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations later this year anyway.
With that in mind, Newcastle are reportedly considering signing another striker during the January transfer window.
Bringing more depth into the Newcastle United squad would only be a positive thing for Howe.
