Alan Shearer summed up every Newcastle United fan after their dramatic win over Leeds on Wednesday night.

After the dreadful news that club legend Kevin Keegan had been diagnosed with cancer, Newcastle United produced a fitting tribute to their former manager.

Harvey Barnes struck a 102nd-minute winner as Newcastle United beat Leeds 4-3 at St James’ Park.

It was a chaotic affair and a comeback that Keegan’s famous team of the 1990s would have been proud of.

Wednesday’s game turned into an all-time Premier League classic and Shearer, who sent a message of support to Keegan on social media earlier in the night, found exactly the right words.

Harvey Barnes breaks Premier League record for Newcastle United

That Barnes moment will live long in the memory and, hopefully, provides a turning point for the season ahead.

This Newcastle team do not yet fully convince but they’ve now managed three consecutive victories for the first time in the Premier League this season.

They are showing resilience, which was profoundly lacking in their performances earlier this season.

Barnes actually ended up scoring the latest winning goal in the Premier League since Opta records began back in the 2006-07 season.

Barnes has been forced to play out of position for Newcastle this season but, having moved over to the left after Anthony Gordon was taken off, he would have done his chances of reclaiming his favoured spot no harm at all.

What a moment in Newcastle’s season this could be. A fitting end to an emotional night on Tyneside.
