Sean Longstaff’s long-term future at Newcastle United is in doubt, but that has not stopped the midfielder getting back to work this summer.
While many of the players not involved in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup out in the United States will be taking a well-earned holiday, Longstaff has been spotted putting in the hard yards.
It remains to be seen if the 27-year-old stays this summer. Leeds want to sign Longstaff, who has just a year left on his contract at St James’ Park.
Amid speculation over his future, Longstaff was seen being put through his paces long before the rest of the Newcastle United squad return for pre-season.

Sean Longstaff starts pre-season training early
On Monday, NE Coaching CO, which is a leading football programme in the North East, posted a video on Instagram.
It shows Longstaff undertaking a number of drills with a coach, weeks before Eddie Howe’s squad are in action in pre-season for the first time, with their opening game coming away at Celtic on Saturday 19 July.
Whether or not the Newcastle United academy graduate will be involved in that is up for debate.
The post was captioned: “An absolute pleasure for us to have Sean Longstaff along for a session this morning! Great to see him putting in the graft ahead of pre-season getting going.”
What has Eddie Howe said about Sean Longstaff’s future at Newcastle United?
Longstaff has previously been a key player for Howe, but has lost his place in the starting lineup due to the form of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in midfield.
As such, Longstaff has been unhappy at Newcastle, having started only eight Premier League games last season. Sadly for the player, first-team chances look likely to be limited again next season too.
Back in April, the Newcastle United manager confirmed Longstaff’s future at the club was “unclear”.
Speaking ahead of the win over Leicester not long after the Carabao Cup final win, Howe said of Longstaff: “His long-term future is slightly more unclear but behind the scenes Sean has been really, really good.”
