Newcastle United’s midfield needs something fresh and exciting to take it to the next level, and Scott McTominay may be the ideal signing.

Throughout this season, Eddie Howe has struggled to strike the right balance in his Newcastle United midfield.

Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?

Joelinton’s drawbacks have become clear, with the Brazilian not offering enough creativity. Bruno Guimaraes could and should be delivering more, too, while Sandro Tonali is perhaps the only real consistent performer in the middle of the park.

While the likes of Elliot Anderson and Ederson have been mooted as targets, there is also talk regarding Scott McTominay making a return to the Premier League.

Report claims Scott McTominay would make Newcastle move

In a report from The Chronicle on Saturday, details have emerged regarding the Scottish star’s future, and it’s suggested there is a good chance the Magpies could lure him away from Napoli.

It’s said Newcastle are indeed looking at McTominay as a potential signing and there is a belief that the 28-year-old would be ‘open’ to a move to Tyneside if an offer was put forward.

Apparently, McTominay has always been keen to work with Eddie Howe, even as far back as 2023.

But, regardless of that interest, any deal to bring the midfielder in would be pretty expensive.

He’s under contract until 2028, and the report claims that Newcastle would have to pay around £50m — double what Napoli paid Manchester United — to make a deal happen.

Scott McTominay would be a gamechanger for Newcastle United

If Newcastle are serious about improving their midfield roster, there could be no better signing than Scott McTominay.

While he’s very talented, a return for Elliot Anderson would be financially irresponsible and should really be avoided by the Magpies.

Newcastle United’s top ten biggest signings ever

Nick Woltemade – £69million

Alexander Isak – £63million

Sandro Tonali – £55million

Anthony Elanga – £55million

Yoane Wissa – £55million

Anthony Gordon – £45million

Jacob Ramsey – £43million

Bruno Guimaraes – £41.5million

Joelinton – £40million

Harvey Barnes – £39million

They could spend half the money on McTominay and end up with a player who embodies everything Newcastle United fans want. You only have to look at the way he’s embraced life in Napoli to see that he would relish playing in front of the St. James’ Park faithful.

McTominay has passion, bite, athleticism, an eye for goal, and crucially, Premier League experience. He’s shown before with Man United that he has what it takes to succeed at this level, and he would be eager to prove they were wrong to sell him.

As he has shown for Scotland of late, and for Napoli over the last year or so, McTominay is capable of grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck and producing magic. Newcastle desperately need that, and he should be priority signing number one for next summer.
