Nick Woltemade has had a rather emotional week as a Newcastle United player.

It started with the lowest of the lows, as his own goal resulted in Newcastle United losing against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Nick Woltemade, who was able to score twice at the right end of the pitch during Newcastle United’s draw with Chelsea.

In between those two games was the Carabao Cup victory over Fulham, which saw the 23-year-old drop to the bench just days after his derby disaster.

During that game, Newcastle fans showed support for Woltemade. They cheered him as he warmed up and sang his name when he came on, standing by the forward despite his own goal at the Stadium of Light.

That ovation blew Woltemade away, who has spoken about what the Newcastle United fans did for him during an interview with Premier League reporter Andy Sixsmith following the draw with Chelsea.

“Last week the game was not good for me – the own goal was not a good feeling,” he said via X.

“I saw Wednesday how the fans supported me so I wanted to give it back. It’s not normal to score an own goal in a derby and then next game the supporters are singing your name!

“It gave me such a good feeling and I wanted to repay them and I’m glad I could.”

Chelsea brace will be crucial for Nick Woltemade

Even in the games before the derby, Woltemade’s form had dipped. He suddenly appeared to be struggling.

Away from his own goal, Woltemade was poor against Sunderland. He only touched the ball 12 times, and cut a dejected figure during his trip to Wearside.

It could have been a sliding doors moment for the Germany international, especially with Yoane Wissa now fit and available. After a blistering start at St James’ Park, the tide could have turned.

Instead, Woltemade is already bouncing back from his Sunderland nightmare. His two goals against Chelsea, taking his season tally to nine, were the kind of goals we want to see more of, while his overall play was impressive.

It was a great display from Newcastle’s most expensive signing, who has been lifted back up by the Toon Army.
