Newcastle United could really do with having Kieran Trippier back from injury soon, but it’s becoming increasingly unclear when he will actually return.
Things are starting to look up for Newcastle, with results going their way and players like Yoane Wissa returning from injury.
Name a better signing than Kieran Trippier in the PIF era at Newcastle United…
However, there are still some notable names on the Newcastle injury list, including Kieran Trippier. The full-back has been out for a few weeks already, and there may still be quite some time to go.
When discussing the issue, though, it seems Eddie Howe and Trippier himself have slightly different ideas on what that recovery period looks like.
When will Kieran Trippier be back?
The injury to Trippier has put an increased burden on Tino Livramento of late, and Howe clearly would like that to be solved as soon as possible.
Howe said: “We don’t have any other options in that position currently with Emil out and Kieran out and they won’t be back any time soon, in a sense of the next few games anyway.
“We hope to get [Trippier] back towards the Christmas period. It would be nice if we could because it would alleviate some of the burden on Tino, but he’s shouldering it really well, as is Lewis, and hopefully that can stay the case.”
Having Trippier back for the festive fixtures would be great, of course. But, comparing Howe’s timeline to the thinking of the player himself throws up an interesting contrast.
In the matchday programme for the Burnley game, Trippier said: “My recovery from injury is going well. It was an unfortunate one, I was in training taking a set-piece. There’s nothing you can do; it’s out of my control.
“All I can do is focus on getting fit as quickly as possible, but respectfully in the right way. These things happen and I’ve been in this position before. I’m old enough to understand and be professional in the way I handle my rehab and I’ll be back soon.
“Of course I miss playing, but the most important thing for me now is focusing on myself and my rehab with the physios to get back fit as quickly and safely as possible to help the team for the rest of the season.”
Clearly, Trippier would rather take his time and get the recovery right, and that’s most certainly the best option.

Slow and steady is the way for injury recovery
How many times have we seen players rushed back from injury, only to relapse almost immediately. The hard truth is, Newcastle cannot afford for that to happen to Trippier.
It’s easier said than done, but if Newcastle can be patient and let Trippier recover properly, it will be a massive benefit in the long-term.
Imagine you’re Eddie Howe, are you tempted to start Yoane Wissa against Bayer Leverkusen? 👀
Newcastle need to sign a full-back in January regardless. So, if Livramento can see out the next month without any injury issues of his own, and the Magpies move quickly in the New Year, we should see the full-back problem solved in more ways than one.
We know the club has been patient with Yoane Wissa in regards to his recovery, and that could and should pay dividends. Hopefully the same approach is taken with Trippier.
