It will be interesting to see what Newcastle United are able to do in the January transfer window.

For the first time in three years, there’s a strong chance that Newcastle United could make a signing at this point of the year.

While the January transfer window is unlikely to see Newcastle spend significantly, there appears to be some scope for midseason recruitments.

Indeed, Newcastle want to sign a midfielder and a full-back in January and there have now been updates on both.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Newcastle United transfer news and rumours.

Newcastle United to make approach for Dayann Methalie

Newcastle have been linked with a move for Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, who is capable of playing as a centre-back, a left-back and a full-back.

The 19-year-old could be a fine addition to the squad, given they lack depth at left back.

According to The Daily Mail, an approach from Newcastle is now anticipated during the January window.

It remains to be seen if they can agree a deal, however.

Real Madrid want to sign Kees Smit

In November, Geordie Boot Boys were told that Newcastle United are interested in signing Kees Smit

However, Smit now looks like one of the hottest properties in European football, so the Magpies face a fight on their hands.

There is no guarantee the 19-year-old central midfielder leaves AZ Alkmaar in January and even if were to, Newcastle would face some big competition.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Smit is Real Madrid’s preferred candidate for a midfield signing.

Aston Villa interested in William Osula

The aforementioned report from The Daily Mail also brought some interesting news in regard to William Osula

Osula has been strongly linked with a move to Eintracht Frankfurt but it seems a club much closer to home are interested in signing him too.

The article suggests that Aston Villa remain keen on the Danish forward, who hasn’t played for Newcastle since November due to an ankle injury.

Villa tried to sign Osula in September but saw the deal collapse due to financial limitations.

However, Unai Emery’s side are reportedly still keen on the forward – although they may only consider a move at a bargain price.
